Visitor centers are vital to the success of an historic site. Visitors should be directed through the site in a manner that educates and delights them while encouraging an interest in more knowledge. This can drive additional revenue through future visits, special events, gift sales and contributions. A well designed visitor center should draw inspiration from, and complement the historic site it serves. Special attention to telling a story is critical, as is the ability to articulate the desires of multiple clients (such as committees and other agencies with vested interests).
